For a long time, GIF Brewery 3 was the app people recommended for making GIFs on a Mac: open a video, mark the start and end, press Create. It also recorded the screen, the FaceTime camera or an iOS device, and added captions and filters.
Where GIF Brewery is today
The last version, 3.9.5, came out in January 2019. The app is no longer on the Mac App Store, and it was built for Intel Macs. If you still have it, it may keep working for a while, but it isn’t keeping up with new Macs or new formats.
What stays the same in Giffiti
Giffiti keeps the part people loved. Open a clip, click Set Start and Set End, press Create. The starting settings will be familiar, and the window stays simple until you need more. See video to GIF.
What’s new
- A multi-track timeline for videos, pictures and GIFs, with keyframes and 11 transitions.
- Captions that move, with 41 fonts.
- 29 effects, masks and cinemagraphs.
- Smaller files, a live size estimate and fit-under-a-size exports.
- MP4, HEVC, transparent video, APNG, PNG sequences and WebP where supported.
Where GIF Brewery still has an edge
GIF Brewery could record straight from a connected iPhone or iPad, and it ran on Intel Macs and much older versions of macOS. Giffiti needs an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 15 or later.
The short version
If you miss GIF Brewery and have a recent Mac, Giffiti will feel familiar on day one and give you more to grow into. Giffiti is an independent app and is not affiliated with GIF Brewery or its makers.
